The podcasting kit is ideal for recording podcasts and interviews. The kit includes a Tascam DR-40 audio recorder, two dynamic Audio-Technica microphones, and desktop mic stands. The Tascam DR-40 provides many recording options. You can use the built in X/Y microphone on the top of the device for one or two devices, you can plug in one or both of the dynamic microphones using the XLR inputs on the bottom for (alt one, two,) three, or four device setup, and a fifth device option is available using the line AUX jack. The dynamic microphones are also USB compatible, so you can plug them directly into your computer and create recordings on your laptop or home computer. The mics can be hand held, or you can use the desktop mic stands to quickly set up a tabletop recording session on the go.
The Tascam DR-40 lets you record either using the internal microphones on the top of the audio recorder or hooking up to two microphones using XLR cables. There are two modes when using the internal mics (the silver ones on the top of the device). If pointing towards each other, they can be used for recording a room noise. The audio pattern crosses each mic and creates a cone effect. When pointed away from each other, the mics are used for recording 1 or 2 people as in an interview, with each mic facing the person speaking. The internal mics are directional and have a narrow pickup pattern. We have included external plug-in dynamic mics, but you are not limited to using the mics with this kit. If you are using external condenser mics from another checkout, you must change the EXT IN slider on the left side of the audio recorder to Mic + Phantom. This will power the attached microphones that require either 24volts or 48volts.
To turn on the Tascam DR-40, hold the power/home button on the front of the recorder until the display lights up. To turn off, hold the button again until the display turns off.
To record to the device, tap the record button on the front of the recorder. This will arm the recorder and it will be ready to record. To start the recording, tap the record button again and you will see the counter starting. To pause recording and continue recording to the same clip, tap the record button. If you want to stop recording and create a new clip, tap the stop button or power/home button.
To get the audio files off of the device, you can either use the included micro USB cable to USB cable or remove the SD card to move files to a computer.
