Media Lab Equipment Guides: Tascam Lavalier Mic

Tascam Lavalier Mic

The Tascam DR-10L is a self-contained lavalier audio recorder. It has a microphone that is screwed in to the top of the recording device. Do not over tighten the microphone.

To turn on the device, there is a slide button on the right side. Slide the button down and hold until the device lights up. It should take less than seven seconds. If you hold the button up, it will immediately go to recording mode. If the device does not light up, confirm that it has a battery. The device takes a triple AAA battery. When the device is turned on, you should confirm battery level before doing a long recording.

To adjust the volume of the microphone, you will need to change the microphone gain. While not recording, tap the labeled menu button and scroll to 01: MIC GAIN. The choices are Low/MediumLow/Medium/High/High+.

On the left side of the microphone is a plug for headphones. On the right side is a volume button for the headphones. These buttons will not effect the gain of the microphone only the headphones.

To record, slide the button on the right side up towards the word "record". The display will turn black and the audio device is now armed and in a ready to record status. To record, slide the button up again and the device will start recording. To confirm, when it is recording, you will see the time stamp display counting seconds. To stop the device from recording, slide the button up again. You will see the display return to "wait". The screen will display a number telling you what clip it just recorded and not a timer counting.

To review audio files while on the main screen. use the up and down arrows next to the menu button to scroll through the files. Use the play and pause button next to the up down arrows to play and pause.

The device has an included micro SD card that is in the device. To capture files, you can either remove the micro SD card and insert it into the included micro SD card reader, or plug in the device using the included mini usb to usb cable to upload the files to a computer. The files will either be .wav or .mp3 formats, which can be changed in the settings menu.
