Celebrate Jazz!

by Ken Orenic on 2024-04-04T13:41:58-05:00 in Music | 0 Comments

April is Jazz Appreciation month, and the Library has you covered with a wide array of Jazz recordings and books that cover the many genres  of Jazz music, from New Orleans to Swing, Big Band to Cool, and Avant Guard to contemporary styles.

During the month of April, come check out our new Jazz display on the lower level of the library.  All display  items can be checked out.  We also have portable CD players for checkout if you need one!

Jazz developed in the latter part of the 19th cent. from black work songs, field shouts or hollers, sorrow songs, hymns, and spirituals whose harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic elements were predominantly African (Columbia Encyclopedia).

Dive deeper into Jazz through this article from Oxford Music Online, which traces the history, development and various genres of Jazz music.

Happy listening!
