Introduction

Chapter books are often considered to be "books for intermediate readers" and differ from picture and early reader books in that most of the story is told solely using words. The variety of chapter books being published in the last several decades has increased immensely and there are wonderful choices, whether you are looking for a mythical fantasy or a realistic coming of age story!

2023 Schneider Family Book Award Middle Grade Winner

Chapter Book Awards

There are a number of different children's literature awards that can be given to chapter books. These include: 

  • John Newbery Medal: awarded by the Association of Library Service to Children to the "author of the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for children." 
  • Pura Belpre Award: presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
  • Coretta Scott King Award: is given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.
  • Schneider Family Book Award: honors an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.
  • Stonewall Book Awards: a set of three literary awards that annually recognize "exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience" in English-language books published in the U.S.
