Shanghai during the time of Foul Lady Fortune was nicknamed "The Paris of the East." It was diverse and cosmpolitan, a hub for art, architecture, business, and culture. Shanghai's wealthy residents enjoyed glamorous nightlife and endless entertainment. Shanghai was also home to opium smugglers and gangsters, who sometimes allied themselves with political groups (as in Foul Lady Fortune).
