The Edo or Tokugawa period refers to the years 1603 to 1868, when the Tokugawa family ruled Japan. The 250 year period is named after the city of Edo, now called Tokyo. This was a time when Japan experienced agricultural development, urbanization, increased education and literacy, relative peace, political stability, and economic growth. This was a time where art flourished. It is considered to be one of the most successful time periods in Japan's history.
