Some selected new books are highlighted below.

One sample search might be something like:  Africa AND ethnic group*

Or just the name of the culture group, combined with the phrase "social  conditions"  :   Asian AND "social conditions"

Another example of combining concepts/terms, like this:  Hispanic* AND cultur*

The asterisks at the end of the word are truncation features, and allow you to pick up variations of the word:

culture or cultures or cultural without having to type out separately all the variations of a word.

The quotation marks around a phrase mean, search  for that exact phrase, not each word separately.

Selected New Books

Caste

"As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, flashlight cast down in the aisles, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power--which groups have it and which do not."   This book gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.   B

Peace Movements in Islam

Contrary to the distorted and in many places all-too prevalent view of Islam as somehow inherently or uniquely violent, there is a dazzling array of Muslim organizations and individuals that have worked for harmony and conciliation through history. The Qur'an itself, the Muslim scripture, is full of peace verses urging returning good for evil and wishing peace upon harassers, alongside the verses on just, defensive war that have so often been misinterpreted. This groundbreaking volume fills a gaping hole in the literature on global peace movements, bringing to the fore the many peace movements and peacemakers of the Muslim world.

Soccer in Mind

From the FIFA World Cup to pick-up games at your local park, soccer is the closest thing in our world to a universal entertainment. Many writers use this global popularity to describe the game's winners and losers, but what happens when we use social science to explore how soccer intersects with culture, society, and the self?   This book provides a thinking fan's guide to the world's most popular game, proposing a way of engaging soccer that sparks intellectual curiosity and employs critical consciousness.
