Media Lab Equipment Guides: Atomos Monitor

Ninja Flame Monitor

Operating the Atomos Ninja Flame Screen Monitor with a camera

  • Turn on the connected camera by switching the power switch to "camera" mode
  • Then, press the power button on the Ninja Flame monitor
  • You will want to swivel the Ninja Flame to have the touch screen facing you. You will do all the recording on the Ninja Flame device, not the camera. Make sure the camera does not have SD card in. Make sure no film data is displaying on the screen.
  • The record button is in the middle bottom of the screen, the red button. To stop a recording, you must press the stop button that appears after you've started recording. You MUST stop your recording before removing the hard drive.

To Retrieve Video Files

  • The Ninja flame has the hard drive in the back of the device (on the left- larger and flatter) as well as 2 spots for batteries. The batteries are available and can be switched out or added into the back of the Ninja Flame as needed.
  • Make sure the device is powered off before this step. Remove the hard drive by sliding it out to the left. You will then get the hard drive reader and insert the hard drive into it. The hard drive reader can then be inserted into any USB slot on a computer.

To Wipe the Hard Drive After Use

  • Insert the hard drive back into the Ninja Flame and power it on (you do not need to turn on the camera for this).
  • Next, select the hard drive icon at the top right of the screen. It has a blue arrow to the right of it.
  • After selecting this, a dialogue box will appear and display the message to 'Format Media'.
  • Select Format to erase all footage on the hard drive.
